UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and his Foreign Secretary David Lammy have insisted they had no choice but to transfer the islands, including Diego Garcia—home to a vital UK-US airbase—due to a ruling by the International Court of Justice. Lammy defended the deal as "a good one," claiming it secures access to the airbase for the next 99 years, though the government has refused to disclose its full details and costs.
Shadow Defense Minister James Cartlidge, a Conservative, criticized the potential fallout, telling The Independent: "If this deal collapses, it will be a complete humiliation for Starmer and Lammy."
